Planet Zoo 2 Cohabitation — Which Animals Can Live Together

Cohabitation Guide
Quick answer: Planet Zoo 2 keeps the cohabitation system from Planet Zoo 1 and makes it "more significant" — compatibility rules decide whether two species can share a habitat. This page only lists pairs verified in the game itself: a shared biome is not compatibility, and pairs inferred from a rule of thumb are not published here as facts.
How this page decides what counts as a compatible pair
There are two ways to build a Planet Zoo 2 compatibility list, and only one of them holds up:
- Verified — the pair is confirmed by the game's own data or by Frontier's Zoopedia. These go in the table.
- Derived — the pair is inferred from a rule of thumb, usually "solitary species can't share, social species probably can". It looks like data, but it is a guess: two species can match on biome, continent and space needs and still be flagged incompatible in game.
Shared biome is not compatibility. Biome is one input among several. Social structure, space, temperature and territory behaviour all feed the same calculation, and Planet Zoo 1 had no shortage of same-biome pairs that could not be mixed. Until a pair is verified in Planet Zoo 2, this page marks it unverified rather than listing it as compatible.
How cohabitation works
Cohabitation is the rule set that determines whether two species can safely share an enclosure:
- Compatible species share a habitat and enrich each other's welfare
- Incompatible species cause stress, fights and welfare penalties
- Compatibility follows the species' real-world needs — biome, space, temperature and social behavior
What changed from Planet Zoo 1
Frontier confirmed cohabitation is "more significant" in the sequel — expect the system to influence more of the zoo planning loop, not just a compatibility table. Update 1.0.4 (October 14) officially updated the cohabitation list, so the in-game compatibility flags are the current source of truth rather than pre-launch guesses.
The classic cohabitation pairs (Planet Zoo 1 reference)
In Planet Zoo 1, classic compatible pairs included zebras/ostriches/warthogs, elephants/flamingos, and mixed antelope habitats. The PZ2 roster adds aquatic and flying species, which opens entirely new mixed habitats (reef tanks, mixed aviaries). Per-species rules live in the in-game Zoopedia, which Update 1.0.4 refreshed — read the compatibility flag on each animal's entry rather than a rule-of-thumb list.
When the table fills in
Planet Zoo 2 unlocked on October 13, 2026 at 3:00 PM BST (14:00 UTC). Pairs get added here as they are confirmed inside the game — read from the in-game Zoopedia and the compatibility flags the game itself shows — not inferred from a species' biome or social grouping. Per-biome requirements and mixed-habitat blueprints follow the same rule. The Animals List tracks the roster meanwhile.
